I am particularly interested in the CAT (Certificate in Adult Teaching)
courses and the extent to which they prepare lecturers to deal with
the needs of international students. Given the number of international
students in tertiary institutions in New Zealand, are we giving
them a fair go?

Research interest:
The barriers to clinical teaching and learning in alcohol, drugs
and addiction.
The specialty of Addiction Medicine addresses important government
health objectives, and growing needs in society, but is still a "poor
cousin" in medical education. Barriers exist at both the undergraduate
and postgraduate level of medical education. Our pilot study, conducted
in 2000 (Focus on Health Professional Education 2001; 3: 59-68)
showed the undergraduate teaching barriers to be a mix of gaps
in knowledge, appropriate attitudes, skill experience and confidence
on the part of clinical tutors. These gaps were self-reinforcing
(low confidence or low knowledge base prevented tutors using their
skills and teaching opportunities to best advantage). Postgraduate
barriers included course accessibility, need for supervision and
clinical oversight in training, and paucity of Addiction Medicine
specialists in NZ to provide supervision . These are also self-reinforcing
barriers. The costs (both in time and financial) of P/Grad education
balance against the reality that investment in P/Grad Addiction
Medicine training is not readily recoverable from the client base.
This is a disincentive as a career option for medical students
about to graduate. Opportunities abound to research interventions
to reduce these educational barriers in NZ.
