The TERNZ conference was established as a forum for learning and teaching enquiry in the New Zealand tertiary sector. TERNZ provides an opportunity to reflect upon and explore the direction of tertiary education, and how practitioners might influence that direction. A distinctive feature of the conference is its emphasis on spaces for discussion and reflection. TERNZ aims to promote dialogue which transcends disciplinary boundaries, and to further explore research-based approached to teaching and learning.

HERDSA provides support for tertiary researchers and the annual TERNZ conference will move each year to one of the main centres.
In 2018 the TERNZ Conference will be hosted by Victoria University of Wellington at the Pipitea Campus.
