Professor Tom Angelo

Tom Angelo is professor of higher education and director of the University Teaching Development Centre (UTDC) at Victoria University of Wellington, having been appointed in June 2004.

He earned his BA, with honours, in government from CSU Sacramento, an MA in political science and a second master’s in education from Boston University, and his doctorate from Harvard’s Graduate School of Education.

Over the past 25 years, he has held positions as academic staff, academic developer, administrator and/or researcher at the University of Akron, DePaul University, Miami University, The American Association for Higher Education (AAHE), Boston College, CSU Long Beach, The University of California at Berkeley, and Harvard University. Throughout, he has continued to teach undergraduates and post-graduates.

His research is primarily on the formative evaluation and improvement of student learning, and his publications include Classroom Assessment Techniques: A Handbook for College Teachers (with K. Patricia Cross, 1993).

Tom has consulted on teaching, assessment, and learning improvement at more than 200 postsecondary institutions – including three dozen in Australia and New Zealand – and given keynote speeches at more than 75 higher education conferences in fourteen countries.
